Cullinan, billed as the world’s most famous diamond mine, has yielded an incredible 138.57-carat gem-quality rough diamond last week!

The Cullinan is the site for the largest rough diamond ever found in 1905 and is a frequent source of large diamond finds. It has yielded over 800 stones weighing more than 100 carats, 140 stones weighing over 200 carats and a quarter of all diamonds weighing more than 400 carats!

Cullinan is also a source of large, gem-quality blue diamonds, which have dominated jewelry auctions over the past year. Cullinan yielded both the Blue Moon of Josephine, which sold for $48.5 million at Sotheby’s in November 2015, and the Cullinan Dream, which sold for $25.4 million at Christie’s last June.

Nathaly Eiche thought she was just flying to Greece on holiday - but instead ended up getting married on the way there! Her long-term boyfriend Jurgen Bogner popped the question while they were flying at 35,000ft.

And he must have been confident Nathaly would say yes - as he arranged for the pair to tie the knot there and then. Not only did he have a wedding dress, rings and an official to carry out the ceremony, he also had Nathaly's dad on hand to walk her down the plane aisle.

Nathaly later shared pictures of their wedding on Instagram writing: "The perfect moment every girl waits for ... He popped the question! And we got married on the same flight! Amazing day! Can't find the right words for all the feelings right now ❤️ just crazy."

Austrian Airlines, who the couple were flying with, were in on the act and even provided a special wedding cake. So what Nathaly thought was just a holiday turned into a honeymoon! Wow! Very sweet proposal and wedding!

One of the most famous spinels, August's newest birthstone, was mistaken as a ruby for most of its history! "The Black Prince's Ruby," which should really be called, "The Black Prince's Spinel," weighs an estimated 170 carats and is currently set in England's Imperial State Crown just above the 317.40-carat Cullinan II diamond. Accompanying its incredible beauty is an amazing history filled with treachery, danger, and deceit!

Its torrid history is recorded back to 1366, when it was stolen from the lifeless body of Moorish prince Abu Said by Don Pedro of Castile. A year later, the evil Don Pedro used the stone as payment to the Black Prince, Edward of Woodstock, for help against a revolt by Don Pedro's own brother.

A gap in its history leads to 1415, when the stone was nearly destroyed during the Battle of Agincourt while being worn in Henry V's gem-encrusted battle helmet. Legend credits the spinel with saving Henry V's life by deflecting a blow while it adorned his battle helmet, and the notorious gem was passed down through several British kings over the next two hundred years until it was set in England's state crown by James I. In the mid 1600s, the Crown Jewels were disassembled and sold, and the Black Prince's Ruby is said to have been bought by a British jeweler for the modern-day equivalent of about $8. Fortunately he later returned it to the monarchy and it was set into Charles II's state crown.

The poor spinel has faced danger at least three times since then: once when nearly stolen by a rascal named Colonel Blood; once in a Tower fire in 1841 though saved by a brave police inspector; and once again during WWII in an attack by German bombers!

Their granddaughter, Lisa Epperly, posted the video on Facebook and said, "Grandpa serenading grandma ... He's 92 and she's 90 ... 50 years together and still in love ... Of course it made me cry."

The couple married in 1966 after meeting in a cafe where Mildred worked. They have 35 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

While peridot has been August's primary birthstone, and Spinel is the new edition to August's birthstones, this month also has a lesser-known alternate birthstone: Sardonyx!

Sardonyx is a form of onyx and is recognized by its layers of reddish brown and white banding. It was popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans who carried into battle talismans of sardonyx engraved with images of heroes such as Mars or Hercules, believing that this would bring courage and victory. Sardonyx is said to be a highly protective stone that embodies a vibration of happiness, optimism and confidence.

The most attractive specimens of this gemstone are found in India.

They say true love stands the test of time, and for Elizabeth and Karl Gfatter, that has certainly proven correct! They met as children, became high school sweethearts, and wed in 1941. On August 1st, they celebrated 75 years of marriage, renewing their vows in their nursing home’s chapel in Poughkeepsie, New York, adorned with white tulle, flowers and their very own priest.

As for advice for a long, happy marriage? Simple. “Honesty, love and faith in each other,” said Elizabeth, 91.

Wishing this beautiful couple many more years of happiness!

Summer jewelry tip #5: De-bling before gardening! Dirt and small rocks are abrasive to jewelry. Gardening gloves can be dangerous, too. Prongs and gemstones can catch on them and rings can slip off when you take off gloves. To be safe, always remove your jewelry before gardening.

Summer jewelry tip #4: Never wear rings in cold water! The cold temperature in pools, oceans, lakes and rivers causes your finger size to shrink temporarily. When this happens, rings can easily slip off fingers without you being aware of it - until it's too late!
